The University of Arizona is considering whether to designate a dorm area for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. This idea, which some universities have adopted, is well-meaning but misguided.
The message is ultimately pernicious: Safety lies in segregation.
Gay-rights groups should be concerned. This kind of reasoning undermines the arguments for allowing gays and lesbians to come out of the closet in the military. It seems to support the rationale for the military's current "don't ask, don't tell" policy: That openly homosexual people can't live in close quarters with those who are straight.
